21 February 1917 – O’Flaherty VC

img_0883Officers and men from 40 Squadron RFC put on the first performance of the George Bernard Shaw play, O’Flaherty V.C., A Recruiting Pamphlet at their base in Treizennes Belgium.

The play was originally written for the Abbey Theatre, Dublin and was announced for production there in November 1915. It had been written to assist recruitment in Ireland, but was quickly withdrawn because of circumstances surrounding the war and the threat of audiences rioting.

The play was directed by 40 Squadron CO Robert Loraine, a well known actor who had also become a pioneer aviator. The cast included Captain Denis Mullholland, Lieutenant William Morrice, Lieutenant Desmond de Burgh and Captain  Robert Gregory.

Robert Gregory was later the subject of W B Yeats poem “An Irish Airman Foresees His Death”
