23 November 1916 – Naval Eight in Action

A mixed day for 8 Squadron RNAS in support of the RFC on the Western Front.

Flight Sub-Lieutenant Robert Alexander Little scored their first victory when shot down an Aviatik in his Sopwith Pup (N5182). The aircraft was seen crashing into words near Courcellette.

They also suffered their first loss when Flight Sub-Lieutenant William Hayhurst Hope was shot down in his Sopwith Pup (N5190). He was last seen diving to identify a group of aircraft, but was not seen again by his flight. He crashed behind enemy lines and taken prisoner. However he died of his wounds shortly after.
