30 July 1916 – 27 and 60 Squadrons suffer losses

Pilots from 60 Squadron in their Morane Biplanes got into a scrap over the front with five enemy aircraft. Lt Lewis Ewart Whitehead and Lt Walter Edward George Bryant (5162) were wounded but managed to land behind the lines at Baizieux. Their colleagues, Captain Leslie Stafford Charles and Lieutenant Cyril Williams (5193) were not so lucky and were seen descending over Estrees emitting blue smoke. Both were killed in the crash.

27 Squadron set out to bomb Epehy in their Martinsydes. Lieutenant ER Farmer (7304) and 2nd Lieutenant Leslie Norris Graham (7471) both failed to return having been downed by anti-aircraft fire and taken prisoner. Their colleague Lieutenant Robert Howell Craster Usher (7282) was wounded in the leg but managed to get back.
