18 May 1916 – Rockwell scores first victory

The recently formed Escadrille Americaine scored its first victory today. The unit had only begun operations at the front on 13 May, having been approved on 21 March And formed on 20 April.

Sergeant Kiffin Rockwell, flying a Nieuport shot down an enemy LVG two seater whilst on patrol over Alsace.

Kiffin, along with his brother Paul, was one of the first Americans to fight for France. He sailed to France on 7 August 1914 and on 30 September 1914 joined the Foreign Legion. He was wounded in May 1915 and after spending some months recovering he transferred to the Air Service and joined the new Escadrille after finishing training.
