29 February 1916 – More pluses than minuses

A mixed day of action for the RFC. Captain RA Saunders and CB Joske from 1 Squadron RFC got into A fight with four Aviatiks in their Morane L (5119) near Passchendaele. They claim to have shot one down, which they saw to dive steeply on fire.

Captain Babington and Lieutenant McClintock of 2 Squadron also claimed to have shot down an enemy aircraft in their BE2c (2801).

2nd Lieutenants EW Leggatt and TS Howe of Squadron shot down an Albatross in their BE2c (1737). The aircraft crashed near Merville after the pilot was hit in the leg. The pilot was subsequently taken prisoner.

Unfortunately 20 Squadron RFC suffered their first casualties when 2nd Lieutenants LA Newbold and HF Champion were shot down near Menin in their FE2b. Both men were captured.
