Lieutenant-Colonel John Harold Whitworth Becke takes up his new role as Officer Commanding, 1 Wing RFC today (Replacing Lieutenant-Colonel Edward Bailey Ashmore). Becke was previously in command of 2 Squadron RFC. He had served as a Flight Commander with 2 Squadron since 1912, before transferring to 6 Squadron in February 1914 as Squadron Commander. Many of his pilots were used to reinforce 2 Squadron at the outbreak of the war and 6 Squadron did not go to France until October 1914. He rejoined 2 Squadron on 2 June 1915 as Squadron Commander. Prior to joining the RFC he served with the Sherwood Foresters from 1899.
Replacing Becke as Commander of 2 Squadron is Major Cyril Francis de Sales Murphy. He moves from being Commander of 4 Reserve Aeroplane Squadron. He only joined the RFC in June 1914 having previously served with Princess Charlotte of Wales’s (Royal Berkshire Regiment) (1902-1910) and then as Assistant Superintendent of Gymnasia, Irish Command (1910-1914).
Also moving today is Major Edgar Ludlow-Hewett who relinquishes command of 15 Squadron to take up the same post with 3 Squadron. He joined the RFC shortly after the outbreak of war in September 1914. He then joined 1 Squadron in November 1914 before transferring to 15 Squadron as Commander in September 1915.
