17 October 1915 – Germans accidentally bomb Switzerland

The Swiss government protested strongly to the German Government today as German aircraft dropped eight bombs on the Swiss border town of La Chaud de Fonds.

This is not the first time German aircraft have entered Swiss airspace. On 21 September, 1915, a German aviator dropped bombs at Porrentruy, and a German Note of 29 September, 1915, in reply to the Swiss protest, stated that stringent precautions had been taken to prevent a recurrence of the incident.

The Swiss Government, lodged a vigorous protest against ” this new violation of Swiss neutrality,” and demanded full and complete satisfaction, and asked for the punishment of the aviators concerned and compensation for the victims.
