5 October 1915 – 112lbs

The War Office has decided to focus on production of the Royal Laboratory 112lb bomb as the standard heavy bomb for the RFC.

When the war began there were only two kinds of bomb in use by the British air services, the 20-lb. bomb designed by Mr F. Marten Hale, and the l00lb. bomb designed by the Royal Laboratory at Woolwich.

Mr Hale first gained the interest of the RNAS for his bomb at Eastchurch in 1913. On the outbreak of war the 20lb Hales bomb was ordered in large numbers by the War Office as well as by the Admiralty. Later the 100lb Hales bomb and the l00lb and 112lb bombs, designed by the Royal Laboratory were put into production.
