6 September 1915 – 12 Squadron arrives in France

12 Squadron RFC arrived in France today. They will be based at St Omer and attached to RFC Headquarters. It’s expected their main role will be long range reconnaissance. The squadron is mainly equipped with BE2cs but has a few Bristol Scouts.

In command is Major Cyril Newall. He learned to fly in a Bristol Biplane at Larkhill whilst on leave in England. He later passed a formal course at the Central Flying School, Upavon in 1913, and began working as a pilot trainer. He was meant to go to India to start a flight training school but war broke out. On 12 September 1914, he was given the temporary rank of captain and went to serve with 1 Squadron RFC on the Western Front. On 24 March 1915 he was promoted to major and appointed to command 12 Squadron.
