26 June 1915 – First sight of the new Fokker for RFC

The RFC had its first combat with the new Fokker EI today. Captains T Carthew and Milne of 2 Squadron were carrying out a recce in their BE2c (1669) near Tounai when they got into a fight with a Fokker at around 4.30pm. The fight ended well as the enemy aircraft was driven off.

Lieutenants Archibald Graham Weir and Lt Hugh Mordaunt Hankin of 4 Squadron were not so lucky however. They got into combat with an enemy aircraft in their BE2c (1698) near Albert-Cambrai, along with another BE2c (1678) from 4 Squadron crewed by Lieutenant FE Hellyer and 2nd Lieutenant Capel. They forced down this aircraft only to be attacked by another enemy aircraft which forced them down in neutral Holland. Both were interned.
