24 July 1915 – Sykes in charge

Colonel Frederick Sykes proposals for the reorganisation of the RNAS in the Dardannelles have been accepted by the Admiralty. In addition, Colonel Sykes is appointed to command the Royal Naval Air Service units in the Eastern Mediterranean, with the rank of Wing Captain. This is likely to put some noses out of joint as Sykes now outranks the current Commander Charles Sampson and Sykes despite his organisational skills in not a “Navy man”.
