15 May 1915 – 8 Squadron RFC suffers first casualties

Captain AD Gaye and Lieutenant G Graham of 8 Squadron were wounded today by shrapnel fire whilst patrolling in their BE2c. Both men managed to return safely to base.

Also today, Captain E F Unwin and Lieutenant Hon H Lygon were on an early moring patrol when their engine was hit by ground fire. Captain Unwin managed to nurse the plane home but crashed into a tree just short of the aerodrome. Both men were taken to hospital, with Captain Unwin suffering minor injuries and Lieutenant Lygon suffering from shock. Captain Unwin had shot through the boot during the action on 9 May as well.
