1 May 1915 – William McCudden killed in accident

Flight Sergeant William McCudden was killed today in a flying accident at Gosport. He joins the growing list of pilots killed in accidents which outstrips those killed by enemy action.

Born 3 April 1891 at Chatham, his younger brother James is also serving with the RFC.

He was one of the earliest airmen, having joined the Royal Engineers in 1905 and subsequently served with eh Balloon Section. He joined the RFC in May 1912, shortly after its formation. He gained his RAeC Certificate (269) on 13 August 1912. he then served with 3 Squadron as a flight Sergeant and went with the unit to Franc din August 1914. He subsequently returned to England with 13 Squadron as a Flight Instructor.
