17 March 1915 – Turkish 1st Squadron in Action

German aviators Cpt. Erich Serno and Cpt. Schneider of the fledgling Turkish 1st Air Squadron, carried out reconnaissance of British and French warships and transportation vessels concentrating to attack in the Dardanelles. The mission proved successful, however, as it spotted that mines had been cleared. Hence the Turkish ship Nuzrat laid additional mines in darkness overnight. The Squadron had only been formed earlier this month, using three military planes manned by German and Turkish pilots, under the command of the German Lt. Ludwig Preussner. Only one of the planes, a Bleriot 2 seater, was operational at this time.

Meanwhile British aircraft also carried out reconnaissance flights in preparation for the assault tommorow.
