3 March 1915 – RFC Northolt opens, Major Carmichael in charge

A new RFC base opened today at Northolt in London today.  The main purpose of the base will be to train squadrons for the front and 4 Reserve Squadron will be based here with Major George Carmichael in command.

Major Carmichael was born on 24 August 1888 in Kingstown, Ireland, the son of Lieutenant-Colonel J Carmichael. He attended the RMA Woolwich, and was commissioned into the Royal Artillery on 18 December 1908. Promoted to Lieutenant on 18 December 1911, he was then posted to the RFC on 11 March 1913. he was further promoted to Temporary Captain on 1 May 1914, being confirmed in this rank on 18 December 1914. He travelled to France on 15 August 1914 with 5 Squadron.
