15 February 1915 – Can we improve bombiing

The RFC published a memorandum codifying its bombing experiences to date in a note called ‘Bomb Dropping Attacks’. The note recognized the difficulty of achieving accuracy during bombing operations, given that there were no bombsights at the time, It recommended releasing bombs from an altitude of 500 feet in order to achieve an accuracy of 50 yards. This point-blank bombing exposes the aircraft to machine-gun and rifle fire from the ground, and increases the risk of casualties.
